Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Bjork concert at the Fox theater. She had been on the short list of performers that I have promised myself I would go see if they ever came to town, or even close to town. (Radiohead, you are also on this list…)
The Fox theater is stunning: It is hands down my favorite theater in Detroit. As we walked to our seats, each set of ushers directed us to the next set further down. I had forgotten how great our seats were until we were shown to the fifth row. Fifth Row! I have to admit that in years past (circa-Vespertine) I have been a larger Bjork fan than I was prior to last Tuesday. However, as a designer I have always admired her artistry and her uniqueness, and was quite looking forward to seeing how she took on a live show: She was amazing.
The stage was set with all different sized flags displaying reptiles, birds, fish and bones on them. A blonde brass band began the show, filing on to stage, playing as they took their places on the stands. As they briefly paused, the lights flared up, confetti fell and glowed under the blacklights and Bjork burst onto the stage in a gold ruffled dress. From that moment on, for the next two hours, she was a glowing ball of gold energy on stage. Her voice filled every part of the theater. How does something so powerful come out of such a tiny person? The lighting was awesome; The musicians were wonderful; She had all the parts perfect.
The first half of the concert had somewhat of a sentimental-with-an-edge feel to it as she performed several songs from Vespertine and other past albums. As the beats for the new single “Earth Intruder” started, the stage lights burst out red and the whole tone of the show changed. As one post the following day put it: the second half of the show turned in to Ultra Rave 9000.
I had a smile on my face the entire show. Everyone in the theater was smiling: you could feel it. Smiling and dancing.
Thank you, Bjork.
