
Like all things Dutch, Tord Boontje’s work is wonderful — in all it’s intricate, fanciful, cut-paper beauty. (Mr. Boontje, please say you will be returning to Target this year for all the holiday fixings! Last years platter and plates are the number one reason I am contemplating throwing a seasonal gathering at my place this December…)
Anyway… Last Sunday, I happily discovered that Boontje has an American “likeness”. While taking advantage of The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s 40 days of free admission, I spotted a black lace curtain, draped from floor to ceiling: The work of Jim Hodges. Rather than cut paper, it was artificial flowers, disassembled and then stitched back together with only the petal edges touching each other: Creating wonderful negative spaces and achieving the artists goal of creating a floral “lace”.
Up close or across the room, Dutch or American — I’m completely enchanted.
