Since I was little, I’ve had a soft spot for Russian nesting dolls. While in Germany, I stumbled upon a flea market with several tables chock-full of the painted ladies. I spent a good hour trying to pick out my favorites for gifts to give back home: Mine is still proudly displayed in my room. And recently, post Halloween ‘07, I have been trying to figure out a way I could be a Russian nesting doll for Halloween ‘08 — You should see some of the solutions! So far, I either need to recruit four other ladies in ascending height who share my costume vision or a whole heck of a lot of paper mache…
That said, I was super excited to see these wooden girls in Maryink’s booth at Chicago’s Renegade Holiday Craft Fair last weekend. In addition to the Russian matryoshkas, Maryink has printed vintage birds, hedgehogs and florals on candleholders, aprons, totes and super soft tees (I picked up a long-sleeve tee, myself). Their selection, all available on Etsy, was a personal favorite of the craft fair.
Additionally, a friend’s comment on my shirt led me to a quick google search of other products featuring the beloved dolls. I came across this wonderfully graphic set of three Russian doll wall decals from Vinyl Wall Art (see below images). What a pleasant surprise above a mantel… Finally, wall art I think I could swing on my rented walls!
PS: If you are 5′4″-5′8″, and have no Halloween ideas (albeit 10 months away), you know where to find me…
And a set of the beautiful originals…
