I’ve had the pleasure of being surrounded by a very talented circle of friends for the last decade-plus: people who love painting, drawing, sculpting, photographing, video-ing, in general making and doing. Stephanie Sweet, local Detroit artist (until this month anyway, New Mexico has her now…), created these two pieces in 2005, and I’ve had my eye on them since. I’m not sure what made me wait so long to purchase them, but I’m so excited that they are finally something that I look at everyday. At 3 3/4″ square, they are petite, but Miss Sweet has sure packed a ton of vibrancy (and paint) on these tiny canvases.
Stephanie’s work spans a wide range of media and is heavily influenced by her life and surroundings. She paints how she feels and layers as things evolve. — I think that’s why I’ve always had a soft spot for these two little ones, they seem happy and full of life, the details are so compact, but not lacking in layers. — As a new mid-west transplant to the desert I can’t wait to see what turns her work takes now!
